Learn About Sonoma County’s Seasonal Weather

Have you ever wanted to explore the beautiful Wine Country of California? Considering making a trip out here to the West Coast? We can’t wait to welcome you! But before you book your trip, you’re going to need to decide when to visit. While Sonoma County does experience different weather conditions throughout the year, there’s never a bad time to visit. Here, we’ll explain what to expect from Wine Country weather in every season, as well as what you can do while you’re in town.

About the Area

Sonoma County is one of the most popular vacation destinations in Northern California, and for a good reason. This area is home to notable cities such as Santa Rosa, Cloverdale, Sonoma, Windsor, Healdsburg, and Petaluma. About 488,000 people call Sonoma County home, and the area attracts over eight million tourists every year! Of course, agriculture is a huge way of life here; besides growing grapes for wine, this area also produces items like apples, dairy and poultry products, hops, and more. Visitors can also experience the nearby beaches, stunning forested areas and other nature-based attractions, delicious restaurants, and fascinating museums throughout Sonoma County.

Seasons

Spring

Sonoma County in the springtime tends to be relatively mild, which can be pleasurable for both indoor and outdoor activities. In March, high temperatures are typically in the mid-60s, but by the end of May, it’s not uncommon to see those temps creeping up toward 80. In the evenings and early mornings, you may experience low temperatures dip down into the 40s or even 30s! Luckily, there’s not too much rain during this season. March gets around nine days of rain every year, while May only sees two.

Summer

As you can probably guess, summer is the hottest season in Sonoma County. Still, though, it might not be quite as hot as you would expect from California. During June, July, and August, high temperatures remain in the low to mid-80s. Low temperatures can often get down around 50, so it’s a good idea to bring a light jacket if you want to head out during these times. You don’t have to bring an umbrella; there’s virtually no rain at all in Sonoma County during the summer months.

Fall

In the fall, conditions begin to cool off a bit, and there are plenty of fun activities to get involved in (but we’ll talk about that more later). In September, temperatures are still quite summer-like, staying in the 80s. October brings slightly cooler conditions, and then in November, things tend to get down into the 60s. Low temperatures in these three months remain in the 40s. As for rain, there tends to be little to no precipitation in early fall. However, in November, it’s not unusual to experience a shower or two.

Winter

Finally, conditions are colder than the rest of the year in winter. Still, many visitors find it preferable to the frigid temperatures back at home! December, January, and February tend to see high temperatures in the 50s and low temperatures in the 30s. You won’t be heading to the beach if you visit during the holidays! Not only is winter the coldest season here, but it’s also the wettest. The winter months tend to see 9 or 10 rainy days each, so it might be a good idea to plan some indoor activities for your group to enjoy.

Annual Events

No matter which season you choose to come and visit Sonoma County, you can find plenty to see and do during your stay. In addition to the permanent attractions, you can also attend some of the fantastic annual festivals in the area! Regardless of the Sonoma County weather, there’s always something fun to get involved in.

Starting in the spring, March is a great time to visit if you’re interested in film. This month brings both the Sonoma International Film Festival and the Sebastopol Documentary Film Festival. Moving into summer, June brings popular events like the Country Summer Music Festival (the biggest in Northern California!), Beerfest, and the beginning of the KJZY Jazz Concert Series. Visiting in July? Celebrate Independence Day at the Red, White, and Boom! celebration, or attend the Fort Ross Festival to learn about all kinds of global cultures. Wrapping up the season in August, you can attend the Art in the Redwoods Festival, the Bodega Seafood, Art and Wine Festival, or the ever-popular Gravenstein Apple Fair!

September brings the famous Taste of Sonoma festival, offering delicious wine tastings and plenty of unique entertainment when the fall arrives. You can also enjoy the Old Grove Festival or the National Heirloom Exposition. In October, the Sonoma County Harvest Fair comes around and brings tons of fun tastings, workshops, and festivities. Come to the Healdsburg Crush festival to sample delicious wines in limited production for something truly unique! Finally, we can talk about the winter festivities. In December, kick off your holiday season at the Luther Burbank Holiday Open House if you’re in town. You’ll experience festive music, treats, crafts, and more! You can join the popular Winter Wineland festival or get some delicious seafood at Chowder Day Bodega Bay in January!
